Do Orange County trash carts stay when a home sells? For the county’s curbside collection program, leave the carts at the address where they were delivered. Do not load them onto the moving truck.
Orange County’s December 2025 collection FAQ says residents cannot take their carts when they move; the carts must remain at the delivery address. County cart-handoff rule. Put the carts on your move-out checklist alongside the collection schedule and any unresolved repair request.
Our handoff framework below is for the Orange County collection program, not every home with an Orange County mailing address. Confirm the program first, then document what stays and what the next resident needs to arrange.
Check the collection program before following county instructions
The county’s Curbside Collection Schedule tool says it only works for residents of unincorporated Orange County with blue- and green-lid roll carts. County schedule-tool scope. The county repair-request page also says submissions from residents of other municipalities will not be processed through that form. Repair-form eligibility.
For your property, confirm whether you use this county program or another collection arrangement. If the answer is unclear, give the exact address to the Solid Waste Division rather than assuming a city name in the mailing address establishes service eligibility. The county lists 407-836-6601 and [email protected] for assistance. County cart-service contacts.
Leave the carts and a usable handoff note
For an address in the county program, the seller’s task is to keep the delivered carts with the address. County moving FAQ. Take a photo of the carts and note where they will be stored when the property is handed over.
Record any lid, wheel or body problem and whether a request has already been made. Share that factual status with the buyer instead of saying a replacement is guaranteed. A pending request and a completed repair should be separate entries in your handoff note.
| Handoff item | Seller’s note | Buyer’s check |
|---|---|---|
| Collection program | Identify the current program or office contacted | Confirm the address is covered before using county forms |
| Delivered carts | Leave the carts and identify their storage location | Check what is present when possession is delivered |
| Cart condition | Describe observed damage and any request status | Choose the correct new-owner or damage-request route |
| Collection schedule | Share the current lookup resource, not only a remembered day | Check the current schedule for the property |
This table is our practical transaction checklist, not a county form or a replacement guarantee. Use it to make an unresolved cart issue visible before the seller’s moving truck leaves.
Use the right route for a new homeowner or damaged cart
The county’s repair page directs requests for carts at a newly purchased existing home or newly constructed home to the Solid Waste Division by phone or email. New-homeowner cart instructions. Its online damage form is for current customers who already have carts and need to report damage. Damage-form purpose.
Do not use the damage form as an assumed new-resident order form. Explain whether the home is newly built, newly purchased or already occupied by you, and describe which carts are present. Ask the county which request fits the situation before treating any replacement as arranged.
The page lists a separate process for a missing or stolen cart: first obtain an Orange County Sheriff’s Office e-report case number using the “Lost Property” incident type, then provide that number to the Solid Waste Division. Missing-cart procedure. Do not assume an unclear new-owner delivery situation is a confirmed theft; distinguish it from the page’s new-homeowner contact route.
Look up collection instead of copying a neighbor’s routine
The county schedule tool offers street-name, parcel-ID and name search options. Curbside schedule lookup. For street-name searches, it says to omit direction prefixes and street-type suffixes such as Road or Drive. Lookup entry instructions.
Use the actual property information and save the result for your move-in file. If the lookup does not work, use the listed hotline rather than assuming the result means there is no collection. No schedule for a sample property is asserted here.
The county’s Green Clean page directs residents to put carts out no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before collection and no later than 6 a.m. on collection day. County set-out window. It says to put empty carts away the same day they are collected. County cart-storage instruction. Plan the last seller pickup and first buyer pickup around the verified schedule rather than leaving full carts at the curb indefinitely.
Keep moving-day waste out of the wrong stream
The county guidelines call for empty, dry recycling placed loose in the blue-lid cart, with cardboard flattened. County recycling guidelines. Plastic bags and Styrofoam packaging do not belong in that recycling cart. Packing-material exclusions.
The guidelines say garbage-cart lids must close fully and that garbage bags left outside the cart will not be collected. Garbage set-out rules. They describe large items, such as furniture and mattresses too large for the cart, as a separate collection category. Large-item distinction.
For a hypothetical move with flattened boxes, packing film and an unwanted mattress, sort those materials before the final collection. Check the applicable large-item instructions for the mattress instead of treating it as extra cart capacity. This is a planning exercise, not a promise that every moving-day item qualifies for curbside service.
