Can you run a ski boat on an Ocoee lake? Only on some. Ocoee’s city code lets motorboats with more than 10 horsepower run only on Starke Lake, Lake Prima Vista and Lake Olympia. Lake Blanchard and Lake Lotta are capped at 10 horsepower on the portions inside the city. Spring Lake and Prairie Lake allow only electric motors and nonpowered boats, with no jet skis. Lake Peach and Lake Moxie allow no motorboats at all. If you are buying lakefront in Ocoee for boating, the lake matters as much as the house.
Ocoee’s boating rules are in Chapter 48 of the city’s Code of Ordinances, adopted in 1990 under Ordinance 89-46 and amended later that year. They apply to 14 named lakes that lie wholly or partly inside the city. City of Ocoee Code, Chapter 48, Boats and Boating. This guide turns those rules into a buying decision and adds the city’s own lake and park records.
Ocoee lakes by what you can run on them
Chapter 48 names these lakes as the “Ocoee lakes”: Lake Blanchard, Lake Johio, Lake Lilly, Lake Lotta, Lake Meadow, Lake Moxie, Lake Olympia, Lake Peach, Lake Pearl, Lake Prima Vista, Lake Stanley, Prairie Lake, Spring Lake and Starke Lake. Section 48-5 sets the motor rules for nine of them:
| Lake | Motor rule under Section 48-5 | What it means for a lakefront buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Starke Lake, Lake Prima Vista, Lake Olympia | The only Ocoee lakes where motors over 10 horsepower are allowed | Ski boats and towed water sports are possible, subject to the operating rules below |
| Lake Blanchard, Lake Lotta (portions inside the city) | No motor capable of more than 10 horsepower | Small outboards, fishing boats and paddle craft; no ski boats on the city portion |
| Spring Lake, Prairie Lake | Electric motors and nonpowered boats only; jet skis prohibited | Kayaks, canoes, electric trolling motors |
| Lake Peach, Lake Moxie | No motorboats of any kind | Paddle and sail only |
Section 48-5 does not set a horsepower rule for the other five named lakes: Johio, Lilly, Meadow, Pearl and Stanley. The code also says motors over 10 horsepower are allowed “only” on Starke, Prima Vista and Olympia, so a ski boat is not allowed on any of them. Airboats are banned on every water body in the city, and the code counts jet skis as motorboats.
Because Lake Blanchard and Lake Lotta lie only partly inside Ocoee, the 10-horsepower cap covers only the city portion. If the home you are considering is on the part outside the city, ask which rules apply there before assuming anything.
Rules that apply even on the big lakes
Starke Lake, Prima Vista and Olympia allow larger motors, but Chapter 48 still sets limits that affect how you use the water:
- Wake zone: It is unlawful to operate a boat within 100 feet of the shoreline at a speed that creates a wake.
- Speed: Boats may not exceed 40 mph in daylight or 20 mph between sunset and sunrise.
- Water sports hours: Waterskiing, surfboarding, aquaplaning, tubing, jet skiing and similar water sports are prohibited from sunset through sunrise. Skiers and personal watercraft take turns in a counterclockwise direction where practicable.
- Distance rules: No watercraft may operate within 300 feet of people in the water. Powered boats must stay at least 300 feet behind a boat towing a skier and 100 feet from anchored or fishing boats.
- Canal to Deep Lake: A 5 mph speed limit applies on the canal between Starke Lake and Deep Lake, and motorboats in canals must run at idle speed.
- Launching: You may not launch from publicly owned shoreline or land around a lake except at a posted public launch.
- Life jackets: Every child under 10 on a boat must wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket at all times.
In practice, a narrow lot on a small cove of an allowed lake may give you less usable ski water than the lake’s rules suggest, because of the 100-foot no-wake band along the shore.
Public access: the Starke Lake ramp and pier
If you are not buying on the water, Municipal Lakefront Park gives public access to Starke Lake. Under the city’s park rules ordinance, Municipal Lakefront Park is among the parks closed from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. The same ordinance expressly allows launching or loading a boat at its boat ramp, and fishing from its fishing pier, at any hour. City of Ocoee Ordinance 2013-006, Chapter 124 park rules.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission includes Starke Lake in its Fish Orlando program. It applies statewide fishing regulations there, except that the panfish bag limit is 20 and possession of cast nets is prohibited, with the rules posted at the city boat ramp and fishing pier. FWC Fish Orlando.
Water quality work on Starke Lake and Prima Vista
The city reports that it performed a water quality management project on Starke Lake and Lake Prima Vista between January 5 and January 9, 2026. It expected a shoreline restoration phase in spring 2026 and plans additional sediment inactivation treatments for the winters of 2027 and 2028. City of Ocoee, Water Quality.
For lakefront owners, the same page advises planting shoreline vegetation, using slow-release, low- or no-phosphorus fertilizer only during the growing season, and not applying fertilizer within 15 feet of a lake or stream. If you are buying on one of these two lakes, ask the seller whether the shoreline work affected the property, and ask the city about upcoming treatment schedules.
Ocoee lakefront buyer checklist
- Confirm the lake by name. A “lakefront” or “lake view” label does not tell you which rules apply. Match the lake to the Chapter 48 list and its motor rule.
- Confirm the home is inside the city. The rules for Lake Blanchard and Lake Lotta cover only the city portions.
- Match your boat to the rule. A ski boat needs Starke, Prima Vista or Olympia. A pontoon with a small outboard fits a 10-horsepower lake. Kayaks fit anywhere.
- Measure usable water. Picture the 100-foot no-wake band from every shore near your lot.
- Ask about the dock. Request any permits and the permit history for an existing dock or boathouse.
- Check the flood zone. Look up the address on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center and get an insurance quote before your inspection period ends.
- Read the HOA documents. If the home is in an association, check for any rules on docks, boats or lake access on top of the city code.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ocoee lakes allow ski boats?
Under Section 48-5 of Ocoee’s city code, motorboats capable of more than 10 horsepower are allowed only on Starke Lake, Lake Prima Vista and Lake Olympia. On other lakes covered by the code, larger motors are not allowed.
Are jet skis allowed on Ocoee lakes?
Ocoee’s code treats jet skis as motorboats, so they follow each lake’s motor rule. They are expressly prohibited on Spring Lake and Prairie Lake, must stay 300 feet from people in the water, and may not be used from sunset to sunrise.
Can I launch a boat at the Starke Lake ramp at night?
Yes. Ocoee’s park rules close Municipal Lakefront Park from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. but allow launching or loading a boat at its ramp and fishing from its pier at any hour. Water sports such as skiing and tubing remain prohibited from sunset through sunrise.
