Wind Mitigation Inspections in Florida: Discounts and Grant Eligibility

Window with accordion hurricane shutters in a sunlit room, for a post on wind mitigation inspections and insurance discounts

A wind mitigation inspection documents features that may qualify for insurance discounts. The insurer determines the applicable credit; neither an inspection nor a retrofit guarantees a fixed saving.

Ask for the actual insurer review

Florida Statute 627.711 requires notice of available mitigation discounts and provides rules for authorized inspectors and the verification form. Obtain the insurer’s approved form and acceptance requirements before scheduling an inspection.

Separate the grant from the insurance discount

Section 215.5586 generally matches $2 from the state for each $1 from the applicant, up to $10,000 in state funding. Eligible low-income applicants may receive up to $10,000 without a matching contribution. That does not establish the resulting insurance premium.

Check all eligibility conditions

The grant statute includes inspection eligibility, an insured home value of $700,000 or less, construction before January 1, 2008, a program inspection within the preceding 24 months, and low- or moderate-income eligibility. It also requires final inspection and other commitments. Funding is subject to appropriations and is not an entitlement.

A hypothetical matching example

On an eligible hypothetical $15,000 project under the standard matching structure, a $10,000 state contribution leaves $5,000 for the homeowner. On a $20,000 project with the same capped contribution, the homeowner’s share is $10,000. Confirm approval and reimbursement requirements before relying on either illustration.
